श्रीमद् भागवत् को पढ़ने से पहले श्रीमद् भगवद् गीता को पढ़ा जाता है। श्रीमद् भागवत् को समझने से पहले, श्रीमद् भगवद् गीता को समझना पड़ता है।
क्योंकि जब तक हम श्रीभगवद्भ गीता पढ़ेंगे नहीं, तब तक श्री कृष्ण के तत्तव को समझेंगे नहीं, तब तक भगवान व उनकी लीलायें समझ में नहीं आयेंगी। यूं समझ लीजिये कि श्रीगीता बुनियाद है, नींव है और श्रीमद् भागवत अट्टालिका है, इमारत है। तो पहले तो नींव बनानी पड़ेगी। देखो न श्रीमद् भगवद् गीता कर्म का उपदेश, ज्ञान का उपदेश देते हुए, शरणागति तक ले गयी। और शरणागति नींव है भक्ति की। शरणागति के बिना भक्ति नहीं हो सकती।
श्रीप्रह्लाद महाराज जी ने नवधा भक्ति के बारे में बताय। जैसे भगवान की कथा को सुनना, बोलना, इत्यादि। किन्तु अन्त में कहा कि अपने-आप को भगवान की शरण में देना, भगवान के श्रीचरणों में अपने को शरणागत करके उनकी महिमा श्रवण करेंगे तो ही श्रीकृष्ण की भक्ति होगी। श्रीकृष्ण के चरणों में शरणागत होकर जब श्रीकृष्ण की महिमा बोलेंगे तो कीर्तन-भक्ति होगी। जब तक हम शरणागत नहीं होंगे तो चाहे हम कथा सुनें, हरिकथा बोलें या भगवान को स्मरण करें, वो पुण्य हो सकता है, सुकृति हो सकती है किन्तु भक्ति नहीं होगी।
अपने आप को भगवान के चरणों में शरणागत करके ये क्रियायें करनी होगीं, तभी भक्ति होगी। जैसे भगवद् गीता शलोक से पहले लिखा होता है…………धृतराष्ट्र उवाच, अर्जुन उवाच, अर्थात् धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा, संजय ने कहा, अर्जुन ने कहा, आदि लेकिन जहाँ -जहाँ पर भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने बोला है वहाँ पर 'श्रीकृष्ण उवाच' नहीं लिखा है, वहाँ पर लिखा है श्रीभगवान उवाच, अर्थात् भगवान ने कहा। श्रीकृष्ण अर्थात् भगवान। भगवान अर्थात् सर्व-शक्तिमान्। श्रीकृष्ण को भगवान नहीं मानेंगे और श्रीकृष्ण की चर्चा करेंगे तो भी भक्ति नहीं होगी।
Before reading Sreemad Bhagavatam one must study Sreemad Bhagavad Geeta. Before qualifying to study Sreemad Bhagavatam, understanding of Sreemad Bhagavad Geeta is required.
This is because without studying Sreemad Bhagavad Geeta, we cannot understand the 'tattva' of Supreme Lord Sree Krishna. And without understanding Sree Krishna we cannot understand His pastimes. To summarize this......Sreemad Geeta is foundation and Sreemad Bhagavat is the building on that foundation. Sreemad Bhagavad Geeta instructs on Karm, Gyan and then absolute surrender. This sharanagati or surrender is the foundation of bhakti or devotion. Without surrender there is no devotion.
Sree Prahlad Maharaj explained about nine limbs of devotion. Listening about pastimes of Supreme Lord, speaking about His pastimes, etc. Eventually he said that one must surrender unto Supreme Lord Sree Krishna. When we will listen to His pastimes, while surrendering unto Him, then only this 'listening' will be termed as bhakti. When we will speak about Sree Krishna while remaining surrendered unto Him, then only we will be performing 'kirtan' bhakti. When we are not surrendered, then whether we speak about Him or whether we hear about Him....it wont matter, as none will fall under devotion or bhakti. This could be punya or sukriti, but not bhakti.
